Supreme Court Increases Compensation for Soldier Injured in Mari Explosion

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has increased the compensation awarded to a soldier for the physical injuries he sustained during the 2011 explosion at the 'Evangelos Florakis' naval base. The original District Court decision was for a payment of €80,000, which was revised by the Supreme Court to €90,000, including €50,000 for loss of future earnings. The explosion caused extensive damage, fatalities, and injuries. The soldier, then 19 years old, suffered permanent hearing damage and tinnitus in both ears. Both sides, the Attorney General and the soldier, had appealed the initial decision, considering it either excessive or insufficient.
