Syria: US Announces Killing of 'Qaeda-Affiliated Leader'

The United States announced that it killed a leader affiliated with al-Qaeda in northwestern Syria, in retaliation for an attack that cost the lives of three Americans in December. The raid took place a few days after similar strikes against the Islamic State (IS), also in retaliation for an ambush that resulted in deaths and injuries. According to a CENTCOM statement, the killed leader had direct ties to IS terrorists and was allegedly planning attacks. This raid is part of a broader US effort to counter terrorism in Syria, despite discussions about a possible reduction in military presence in the region. The December 13th attack was the first known attack against US forces in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The US, along with other countries such as Jordan, Britain and France, has carried out strikes against jihadist groups in Syria, aiming to prevent the resurgence of IS. Despite IS's defeat in 2019, its fighters continue to operate in the Syrian desert, launching sporadic attacks. The future US military presence in Syria remains uncertain, as Donald Trump has expressed his opposition to the continued deployment of American troops abroad.
