Taxi Drivers to Strike in Paphos and Larnaca Over 'Piracy'

Taxi drivers in Cyprus, particularly in Paphos and Larnaca, are preparing to strike in protest against unfair practices of "piracy" in their industry. According to the president of the Pan-Cypriot Taxi Association (POAT), Konstantinos Konstantinou, the problem has doubled in recent years, as individuals without a license are using cars to provide transportation services through illegal platforms. The mobilizations include a protest rally in the Paphos airport area today at 10:00 am and a similar event in Larnaca. POAT also denounces violations of territories, where taxi drivers transport passengers outside their designated area. Furthermore, the association reports that intercity taxis are operating as urban taxis, while rural taxis are active in urban centers, creating unfair competition. It is also alleged that rental cars are being used for airport and city transfers instead of being exclusively available to tourists. POAT is calling for substantial policing at airports and the presence of a permanent supervisor to prevent these practices. Mr. Konstantinou described December as the worst in the last 25 years for the industry and urged the Ministry of Transport to take immediate action to protect professional taxi drivers.
