TEPAK Professor: “Culling is Necessary to Reduce the Disease”

TEPAK Professor Dimitris Tsaltas emphasized the necessity of culling animals to control foot-and-mouth disease. He explained that when infected animals are identified, all animals in the same area, both infected and healthy, are culled as a preventative measure against the spread of the disease. Even vaccinated animals that become infected must be culled. Mr. Tsaltas described this strategy as harsh but necessary, despite the potential economic consequences. He stressed that the strategies of vaccination and culling are complementary, with culling immediately reducing the viral load, while vaccination is expected to have a greater impact in the medium term. He pointed out that adherence to the strict EU protocol is crucial for the eradication of foot-and-mouth disease. In addition, he emphasized the importance of continuous sampling for early detection of the disease, while reassuring that pets are not at risk, as they are not cloven-hoofed animals. Finally, Mr. Tsaltas clarified that foot-and-mouth disease is not transmitted to humans, but the main factor of transmission is humans and their activities, as they can inadvertently carry the virus.
