The Fatigue of Values

The author analyzes the feeling of fatigue that permeates society towards serious issues and injustices. Starting from a personal experience in training, where exhaustion leads to compromises and acceptance of inadequacy, the writer extends the observation to how we deal with international events and political developments. Instead of a strong reaction to actions that violate our values, such as questioning the sovereign rights of other countries, we often resort to a tired acceptance of 'power politics'. However, this acceptance leads to familiarity with injustice and a loss of our moral compass. The author emphasizes that realism does not mean passive acceptance, but awareness of the consequences of our actions, both strategic and ethical. Indifference to injustice, even when it happens far from us, erodes our own value ground and leaves us vulnerable when the same patterns of behavior turn against us. In the context of the Cypriot reality, the author wonders how we can defend our own rights and values if we simultaneously accept the violation of the rights of others. Apathy and silence, he warns, are more dangerous than injustice itself, as they make us complicit in the violation of the principles we support.
