"The financial sector is a transformer" says the Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission

The Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, Giorgos Theocharides, emphasized the importance of building a more competitive and innovative European economy, during an event of the Bloomberg EU Policy Series in Brussels. He focused on the financial sector as the “engine” of this transformation. Mr. Theocharides referred to the ongoing fragmentation of European capital markets, which increases the cost of capital for businesses and limits the growth of innovative companies. He added that this fragmentation creates obstacles for savers. He proposed the Savings and Investment Union as a means of leveraging the private savings of European citizens, amounting to 14 trillion euros, to channel them into productive investments, contributing to the green and digital transition. He stressed that strengthening the capital markets is a crucial step towards achieving Europe's strategic autonomy.
