The Same Pattern with the Defrocked Monks of Avvakoum Monastery – What the Church Says About Their Uncanonical Activities

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus has declared the defrocked monks of Avvakoum Monastery as “uncanonical,” emphasizing that the ceremonies they perform have no sanctifying grace. The Church cannot prevent the monks from presenting themselves as clergy, but warns the faithful not to pay attention to their activities. The State is responsible for investigating any illegal actions they may take. The Church is considering imposing new penalties on the monks if they do not comply with the Synod’s decision to transfer to other monasteries. The monks were initially suspended and then defrocked by the Synodic Court.
