Trade Union Leader Calls for Minimum Wage Re-evaluation

The General Secretary of SEK, Andreas Matsas, emphasized the need to re-evaluate the minimum wage in order to more effectively support the most vulnerable groups of workers. The statement was made after a meeting of the trade unions SEK, PEO and DEOK to coordinate their next steps. The trade unions agreed to send a memorandum to the President of the Republic, requesting a meeting to discuss four important issues. The first concerns improving the amount of the minimum wage, taking into account the increase in the cost of living and the incorporation of the minimum wage provided for in sectoral collective agreements. The remaining issues include redefining the parameters for the employment of workers from third countries, extending collective agreements and implementing the “Ergani 2” software for better employment controls and combating undeclared work. Mr. Matsas expressed hope for the regular convening of the Labour Advisory Board by the Minister of Labour, in order to manage labour issues more effectively.
