Trade Unions Speak Out Against Attempt to 'Criminalize' Social Protest

Trade union leaders have denounced an attempt to 'criminalize' social protest following charges brought against them for damage to 'state' property during a demonstration on December 5, 2025. The charges relate to damage to railings caused when tires were burned to enter the building of the 'Ministry of Finance'. The value of the damage is estimated at 22,000 TL (449 euros). The leaders of the KTOEÖS (teachers), KTÖS (primary school teachers) and KTAMS, Kamu-İş and Kamu-Sen unions of 'public' employees denied the charges and stated that they are fighting against impoverishment and injustice. They accused the 'rulers' of the situation and stressed that defending rights is not a crime. The trade unions accused the 'Ministry of Finance' of filing the complaint and argued that the real damage is caused by mismanagement and corruption. They pointed out that the money withheld from teachers could be used for the development of education and the country. The trade union leaders pledged to continue their struggle for justice and democracy, exposing corruption and mismanagement. They stressed that their conscience is clear and that they will only be held accountable for defending their rights.
