UK Deputy Foreign Minister Visits Cyprus Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

British Deputy Foreign Minister Stephen Doughty visited Cyprus amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly following the recent drone attack on the Akrotiri British Base. During his visit, Mr. Doughty is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Parliament President Annita Dimitriou, and AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou. This visit is the second by a British official to the island since the start of the war in the Middle East, with Defence Minister John Healey visiting on March 5th. The UK has strengthened its military presence in the region, deploying military assets such as the Dragon destroyer and Wildcat and Merlin helicopters. Mr. Doughty, who has repeatedly stated he is in regular contact with the Cypriot Foreign Minister, recently met with representatives of the National Cypriot Federation in London, assuring them of the British government's highest priority on the safety of Cypriots. Furthermore, Mr. Doughty emphasized the strengthening of anti-missile and drone defense capabilities, both before and after the Akrotiri attack. Ways to improve the immediate information of residents in the base areas are also being explored, through better real-time information exchange. Mr. Doughty is the UK's main interlocutor on the Cyprus issue, and his visit underscores the importance the UK attaches to the situation in Cyprus and the wider Middle East region.
