Ukraine Receives First Humanoid Robots for Battlefield Testing

Two humanoid robots, Phantom MK-1, have been delivered to Ukraine for testing in real combat conditions, marking the increasing use of robotics and artificial intelligence in warfare. The American start-up Foundation, the manufacturer of the robots, aims to develop and improve their capabilities through field evaluation. The robots are initially being used for reconnaissance missions, with a long-term goal of taking on dangerous tasks currently performed by soldiers, thereby reducing human exposure to risks. Ukraine has emerged as a significant testing ground for new military technologies, attracting interest from defense companies and start-ups. Foundation is also in talks with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for potential use of the robots in patrols along the southern border. The company has accelerated its plans for mass production, aiming to build up to 50,000 units by 2027. The use of robotic systems on the battlefield is increasing rapidly, with thousands of robotic operations taking place in Ukraine, primarily for supply missions. While most robots are still used in supporting roles, interest is expanding into more direct operational missions. The deployment of the Phantom MK-1 in Ukraine could be one of the first known cases of a humanoid robot being evaluated on an active war front. The Phantom MK-1 will not be sold conventionally but will be available through an annual lease of approximately $100,000 per unit. The company intends to evolve the Phantom platform to handle various weapon systems, further enhancing its capabilities on the battlefield.
