UN Security Council Meets Over Israel's Recognition of Somaliland

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting regarding Israel's recognition of "Somaliland". The meeting was requested by the A3+ group (Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia) and supported by China, Pakistan, and Russia. The UN Assistant Secretary-General, Khaled Khiari, expressed concern about the security implications, emphasizing the need to respect Somalia's territorial integrity and promote dialogue. The United States defended Israel's right to conduct diplomatic relations but clarified that there is no change in US policy regarding the recognition of Somaliland. US Representative Tammy Brooks criticized the hypocrisy of the Security Council, stating that there was no reaction to the recognition of a Palestinian state by certain countries. Greece, through its Permanent Representative Ag. Balta, expressed strong concern and stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. The United Kingdom also reiterated its non-recognition of Somaliland's independence.
