Union of Municipalities Rejects New Landfill Tax: Concerns Over Household Burden

The Union of Municipalities has strongly opposed the government's intention to impose a landfill tax, warning of a significant burden on households. Municipalities argue that the cost will inevitably be passed on to citizens and attribute responsibility to the state for inadequate infrastructure management. The Mayor of Amathous, Kyriakos Xydias, emphasized that the Union of Municipalities does not consent to the tax, given the Ministry's failure to ensure proper waste management. He also warned that the government's plan would lead to increased waste management costs and urged the state to take responsibility. Mr. Xydias stated that the tax was proposed by the Ministry based on the Recovery Fund, instead of prioritizing addressing deficiencies in infrastructure for source waste sorting. The Union of Municipalities will react strongly and discuss the issue at its Executive Committee. The President of the Union of Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, pointed out that municipalities cannot afford additional taxes as they already face financial difficulties. Imposing a new tax, such as a landfill tax, further burdens the financial situation of municipalities and citizens. The Union of Municipalities calls on the government to reconsider its decision and find other ways to fund waste management without burdening citizens and municipalities. It also requests that priority be given to developing the necessary infrastructure for source waste sorting, in order to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
