US Commandos Seize Two Tankers, Sending Messages to Venezuela and Moscow

US forces have seized two tankers, one flying a Russian flag, marking a new, more assertive phase in the US strategy to control Venezuelan oil exports and a dangerous escalation in the confrontation with Moscow. The operation, lasting two weeks, began in the Caribbean and ended in waters between Scotland and Iceland. The tankers, Marinera (formerly Bella 1) and Sophia, are accused of illegally transporting oil from Venezuela, violating sanctions. The Marinera, initially flagged in Iran, changed course and disabled its AIS system to evade detection, was renamed, and raised a Russian flag, but the US deemed it “stateless.” Russia protested the seizure, but the US dismissed accusations of violating international law. The incident highlights the use of a “shadow fleet” by sanctioned countries to continue exports.
