US Says It's Winning the War With Iran – It's Time to Act Like It

It is becoming increasingly clear that the White House rushed into war with Iran without fully considering the potential consequences. This is another reason to expedite the end of the conflict. After nearly three weeks of hostilities, the US is reaching the limits of its air power. While US and Israeli strikes have destroyed thousands of military targets and killed dozens of high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the regime remains standing. Drone and missile attacks against neighboring countries and commercial ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz have paralyzed the Persian Gulf region. Oil prices are soaring – industries from agriculture to semiconductors are worried about shortages of essential raw materials. Fears of inflation are spreading. Expanding air strikes is more likely to increase collateral damage and turn the population against the West than to overthrow the regime. A real replacement of the government – now reportedly led by Khamenei’s equally hardline son, Mojtaba – would require tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of American soldiers. Even more limited ground missions, such as seizing the more than 440 kilograms of near-weapons-grade uranium believed to be buried under Iranian nuclear facilities, taking the oil export hub on Kharg Island, or stretches of coastline to protect shipping, would dramatically increase the chances of a new stalemate in the Middle East. And it is concerning that a Marine unit is reportedly now heading to the region. The White House has a better option: declare victory and move to de-escalation.
