Vafeadis and Damianou: Cyprus Remains a Safe Destination

Ministers of Transport and Energy, Alexis Vafeadis and Michalis Damianou, assured that Cyprus remains a safe destination during the opening of the international conference “Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030” in Limassol. They emphasized that life in Cyprus continues normally despite the volatile situation in the region and conferences are proceeding as scheduled. Minister Vafeadis highlighted the critical role of coastal cities in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development, referring to the European Union initiative for climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Limassol, participating in this initiative, aspires to become a model for the transition to climate neutrality in the Mediterranean region. A significant issue raised was the dependence on private cars in Limassol, which leads to traffic congestion and increased greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, the Ministry of Transport is promoting the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) as a tool for transforming mobility in the city. Minister Vafeadis stressed the need for coordinated action, adequate resources, and strong cooperation between all levels of government to achieve climate neutrality, expressing confidence that Limassol has the potential to become a model city for the green transition in the Mediterranean, leveraging its dynamic character and international orientation.
