Why is Overthrowing Iran's Theocratic Regime Considered Impossible Today?

Despite the deep and ongoing legitimacy crisis facing the Islamic Republic of Iran, overthrowing the regime is considered extremely difficult. Public discontent, economic stagnation, impoverishment, and repression have led to mass protests, but the regime possesses a strong control and security mechanism. The institution of the Supreme Leader ensures stability and prevents internal rifts, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) acts as the real guarantor of internal security and political continuity. Furthermore, the distinction between the IRGC and the regular army, which is not involved in repression, helps to avoid military defection. Recent protests, despite their scale and duration, have failed to substantially shake the regime's power structure.
