Kounoudis Says Future of Cypriot Defence Industry is Optimistic

Tassos Kounoudis, President of the Cyprus Association of Research and Innovation Companies and Cyprus Defence and Space Industry Cluster, expresses optimism about the future of the Cypriot defence industry. He points out that the Cypriot industry has begun to leave its mark on the European value chain and the domestic economy, moving from research and development to a phase of testing and commercial exploitation. Cyprus's strategic advantage lies in the development of innovative, high-tech systems, with the aim of strengthening exports and penetrating new markets. Cypriot companies have already developed systems that are used by advanced armies abroad, focusing on areas such as unmanned systems, electronic warfare, cybersecurity and space applications. The Cypriot defence industry has received substantial support from the Ministry of Defence, with 20 Cypriot companies participating in 57 projects with a budget of 860 million euros, absorbing approximately 50 million euros. The sector employs more than 2,000 scientists and engineers, while the National Guard is testing and evaluating Cypriot systems.
