The Illusion of Change

The author analyzes the illusion of change in Cypriot politics, pointing out that predictions of fragmentation and the rise of new forces are repeated in every election, but do not reflect reality. DISY and AKEL, despite their wear and tear, remain the dominant forces, possessing organization, networks, and a stable base of voters. Smaller parties gain protest votes, but lack the reach and cohesion to challenge power. Cyprus is in a period of decay, not rupture, with the system remaining largely the same.
