President of KSEEK: Optimistic Future for Domestic Defense Industry

The President of the Cyprus Association of Research and Innovation Companies (KSEEK) and Cyprus Defence and Space Industry Cluster, Tasos Kounoudis, expresses optimism about the future of the domestic defense industry, emphasizing that the Cypriot industry is now leaving its mark on the European value chain and the domestic economy. The industry is transitioning from research and development to a phase of testing, operational evaluation and commercial exploitation. Cyprus's strategic advantage lies in the development of innovative, high-tech systems. Cypriot companies are seeking to strengthen exports, penetrate new markets and consolidate their international presence. Already, Cypriot systems have been exported and are used by advanced armies. The emphasis is placed on areas such as unmanned systems, electronic warfare, cybersecurity, sensors, secure communications, maritime surveillance, artificial intelligence and space applications. The Ministry of Defense has provided substantial support, particularly in research and innovation. A total of 20 Cypriot companies are participating in 57 projects of the EDIDP and European Defense Fund programs, with a budget of 860 million euros, of which 50 million euros have been absorbed by the Cypriot companies. More than 2,000 scientists and engineers work in the sector, and there are many collaborations between Cypriot and foreign defense companies.
